I dream of barns,
\nGreat vast structures a century or so old,
\nWeathered boards painted a noble red or deep blue,
\nTrimmed in white edging and rough stones,
\nLit from within by the warm, flickering glow
\nOf tableside lamps with stained-glass shades,
\nCoaxing me to linger a while on cracked leather couches,
\nCurled up with one of ten thousand escapes
\nBound up in paper and bordered by clothboard.
\nI dream of trees,
\nOf wind whistling through wild Ohio woods,
\nStreams winding between their roots
\nAnd around mossy boulders, giants’ marbles
\nNo sound of traffic or neighbors fighting,
\nJust the cracks and crumbles of squirrels and deer
\nSetting about their business
\nOf timeless, of natural, of life.
\nI dream of family,
\nWife, two kids, a couple of cats,
\nBickering over simplicities like homework and chores,
\nFootball games and band concerts and trips to the grandparents’,
\nCelebrating tiny achievements in the local papers,
\nRemembering the places we used to go and live
\nWhen we were younger and still fighting
\nTooth and claw, body and soul,
\nTo gather the materials needed
