Jefferson Reilly sits on the loading dock,
\ncurrogated metal cold through his jeans,
\nscribbling syllables across the back of a postcard
\nin failing ink from his manager’s pen,
\nstruggling to capture just what it is
\nhes sure he doesn’t mean.
\nJefferson Reilly lets out a long, low moan,
\nburies his face in his hands,
\nsmudges his cheek with a smear of blue
\nand listens to the traffic slouching by –
\na rumble parade of Chevys and Suburus
\neach piloted by a soul whose fractured mind
\nis faraway lost on distant things.
\nJefferson Reilly thinks catamaran,<\/i> and cannonball,<\/i>
\nhe thinks daffodil<\/i> and diplodocus<\/i> and Duran Duran,<\/i>
\nhe thinks everyone<\/i> and everywhere<\/i> and everything,<\/i>
\nhe thinks failure<\/i> and falter<\/i> and philosopy<\/i> –
\nand scratches out the last with a curse and a smile.
\nJefferson Reilly sits, purses his lips,
\nscratches his chin, clucks his tongue,
\nlets loose a sigh that rattles his ribs,
\nshakes his head to release his thoughts,
