\nThe great best lumbers on the river’s near bank
\nwhile the spires emerge from the other side’s fog,
\nthe day is breaking as sure as the backs
\nof the men assigned to these early chores –
\nthe barge must be shorn of its cargo
\nas swiftly as a cow heavy with milk,
\nprofits and meals await the release
\nof potential energies invested upstream.
\nThe grunts and the cries of the workes
\nremind another passing by of other events
\nbest left concealed in a different mist
\nhe himself had woven to simply survive,
\nhe quickens his pace to place some distance
\nbetween himself and the men, and the crane,
\nand the shadow of a man in a young French boy’s
