\nShe is caught momentarily transfixed,
\nher hurried errand abruptly paused
\nat the sight of a flock of men in the rain.
\nThe horse-drawn carriage is dark bedecked
\nwith a bristling cluster of black umbrellas,
\na melancholy parade for a soul unknown.
\nThere is no music, no drum, no chant
\naside from the clop clop<\/i> of the horses’ hooves,
\npunctuated by an occasional splash
\nof puddles, or tears, or color –
\nthe flower in her bonnet the only red
\nin a day given over to more somber hues.
