She tries to tell him it’s a good thing,
\ntries to make him smile,
\nbut all he hears is her desire to leave
\nand he stares at his hands on the table.
\nShe tries to promise she’ll be back
\nbut the words stick in her throat
\nbecause who is she to say such things
\nwhen she’s the one who’s already found someone new?
\nHe stares at his hands and thinks of his dad,
\nwonders if this is how he felt when Mom left,
\nthinks that maybe someday he could use this
\nin some overwrought writing assignment,
\nmaybe even use it to get into college,
\nand he forces a smile –
